From Chalkboards to Chatbots. Reshaping SA’s Education.

I still remember the smell of chalk dust in my primary school classroom. Back then, technology meant overhead projectors if you were lucky. Fast forward to today, and learners are asking ChatGPT for homework help, teachers are hosting virtual lessons, and WhatsApp is a new-age parent-teacher meeting tool.

The transformation of South African classrooms is often quiet, but powerful. Everyday tech,  is reshaping the way our students learn.

Did you know that over 91% of South Africans have access to a mobile phone? For many learners, that device is their first point of contact with the digital world. It’s how they access YouTube for science experiments, download worksheets from WhatsApp groups, or revise past papers on their school’s Moodle platform. Even in under-resourced schools, educators are emerging as digital innovators, leveraging basic tools to create impactful and accessible learning experiences. Technology is a powerful tool, but it is merely an enabler in an interactive classroom. The way the educator uses it is critical in determining the success of the learning experience; with skillful use of technology, the possibilities for knowledge creation are endless. Technology enables an educator to “flip” their classrooms. Instead of just lecturing, they can record their lectures in video format (or sometimes even use YouTube videos) and make these available to learners before coming to class.

According to the Department of Basic Education, nearly 60% of public schools use at least one digital learning tool:

The Smart Classroom Project in Gauteng is equipping schools with tablets and e-learning systems.

In the Western Cape, the e-Learning Game Changer is rolling out digital content and training teachers to use it.

NGOs like Nali’Bali and FunDza Literacy Trust are using mobile-friendly platforms to promote reading through apps and SMS.

We are not just talking about gadgets. We aare talking about access, collaboration, and creativity.
